First Glance Versus Verified Understanding

EX-COMP-012 — First Glance Versus Verified Understanding

Objective

Separate rapid scene gist from complete scene comprehension and verification.

Design

Expose matched layouts for 50, 100, 150, 300, and unlimited milliseconds, followed by a mask in all timed conditions. Counterbalance layouts, exposure order, and question order.

Measures

  • page or scene type
  • primary action
  • object presence
  • object identity and state
  • relationship comprehension
  • predicted next step
  • response confidence

Prediction

Coarse category and hierarchy judgments survive short exposure; accurate state, relationship, and next-step judgments require longer exposure.

Falsification Condition

Relational and state comprehension reaches the same accuracy curve as coarse category and hierarchy judgments across exposure durations.

Analysis Requirement

Report accuracy and confidence separately. Treat above-chance gist as provisional interpretation, not evidence of complete actionable understanding.
